About Pain and Endorphins
Pain is a signal from your nervous system that something may be wrong. It is generally an unpleasant feeling, like a prick, tingle, sting, burn, or ache. It could be sharp or dull, may come and go, or may be constant. You can feel pain in one area of your body, like your back, or you can feel pain all over.
There are two types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute pain comes on suddenly, due to disease, injury, or inflammation, and can often be diagnosed and treated. It usually goes away, though it can turn into chronic pain. Chronic pain lasts for a long time, and can cause severe problems.
Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers, and are released by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in response to pain or stress. This group of peptide hormones both relieves pain and creates a general feeling of well-being. The name of these hormones comes from the term "endogenous morphine."
About 20 different types of endorphins exist. The best studied of these is beta-endorphin, which is the one associated with the runner’s high. We release endorphins when we laugh, fall in love, have sex, and even eat a delicious meal.

Intention
For the maximum effect, it helps to focus your intention on what you want to heal. Bring your focus to the part of your body that is in pain. Visualize a dial in that part, turned up all the way. Imagine gradually turning that dial down and, as you do so, releasing the pain from the area. As the pain evaporates, imagine the fumes transforming into joy, and soaking into your whole body. Finally, sit and relax in the joy and stillness.
